Members of the Syrian People's Assembly on Sunday elected Abdul Hamid al-Awak as speaker of the assembly, after he received 99 votes, during the first session of the new term held in Damascus in the presence of Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara.

President al-Shara, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), explained that the commencement of the People's Assembly's work is an important national milestone, representing a new step towards consolidating consultation and responsibility and building state institutions on the foundations of dialogue, competence, and the rule of law.

In the session, attended by the head of the Supreme Committee for Assembly Elections, Muhammad al-Ahmad, and a number of ministers, the 206 members of the assembly took the legal oath before electing the assembly's presidency.

Election of the Assembly's Presidency

The assembly indicated the election of Mustafa Mousa as first deputy speaker of the People's Assembly, and Madonna Bishara as second deputy, while Muayyad Habib assumed the position of secretary.
