The American news website Axios said that regional mediators are seeking to reduce the escalating tension between the United States and Iran, amid calls for a new round of negotiations.

The website reported Thursday evening, citing unnamed informed sources, including two sources from the mediation countries and a US official, that regional governments are trying to calm tensions between the two countries.

A regional source from one of the mediation countries stated that the mediators believe that the recent Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz were carried out by elements within the Iranian regime that oppose the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran and seek to undermine it.

The sources added that officials from Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia held several phone calls with US and Iranian officials on Wednesday in an attempt to reduce the state of tension.

A regional source involved in the mediation said: 'There are intensive diplomatic efforts to first agree with both sides on de-escalation, and then set a date for another round of negotiations between the technical teams.'

This comes amid rising tensions between the two sides, as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Thursday morning that it carried out new strikes targeting about 90 Iranian military sites, including air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and logistics infrastructure on the Iranian coast.

In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced that it targeted US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, warning that it would expand the scope of its attacks if US strikes continue.

The Gulf region has witnessed escalating tension since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.

After Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18, negotiations between them continue with the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan to reach a final agreement.
