Six people were killed and 21 others injured in two earthquakes that struck a mountainous region in central Peru.

The head of Peru's Civil Defense, Luis Vásquez, stated today that preliminary reports indicate 6 deaths and 21 injuries, in addition to the destruction of 48 homes and damage to 18 others, noting that the incident affected about 300 people, while authorities are working to provide tents for shelter.

Vásquez added that emergency teams and firefighters arrived in the affected areas early Sunday morning to clear debris, amid fears that there may be other victims trapped underneath.
