Khamenei Buried Amid Crowds and Revolutionary Slogans
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was buried in Mashhad after a week of funeral processions, coinciding with rising tensions with the US.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was buried in the shrine of Imam Reza in the northeastern city of Mashhad on Friday amidst a massive turnout of mourners. The burial came after a week of funeral processions and mourning ceremonies, coinciding with escalating conflict with the United States following a brief truce.
Khamenei was killed in the first strikes of the war launched by the United States and Israel on February 28, while Washington and Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire last month. Khamenei's body was transported on Thursday through the crowded streets of Mashhad towards the shrine, with clerics and mourners waving Iranian flags, pictures of the late leader, and red banners bearing revolutionary slogans.
Despite Iran surviving a months-long US-Israeli military campaign, the country faces internal challenges, and Khamenei's 37-year legacy remains contentious and divisive. Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son and declared successor, has remained out of sight since the war began, having been seriously injured in the same attack, and his movements are under tight security restrictions.
During the funeral, mourners chanted anti-US slogans, including "We swear by the blood of the Supreme Leader, we will kill you, Trump!" and women raised banners calling for the killing of former US President Donald Trump. As the sun set, the shrine courtyard filled with mourners chanting "Death to America," while a helicopter transported the coffin into the shrine for the burial ceremony.
Iran's official news agency reported that the burial of Khamenei and four family members who were killed with him was complete. Earlier, funeral ceremonies were held in Tehran and Qom, as well as in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala, where streets saw massive crowds and revolutionary chants.
