(CNN)-- Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was buried in the early hours of Friday local time, according to a statement published on his official account on platform X, formerly Twitter.

The burial ceremony took place at the shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad, Khamenei's birthplace. His family members attended the private ceremony, following a days-long popular funeral that saw large crowds of mourners.

The new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear publicly during the funeral.

The week-long funeral ceremonies concluded on Thursday, with several stops, most notably receiving foreign delegations in Tehran, opening the Imam Khomeini prayer hall to mourners, holding the funeral prayer and main funeral ceremony in the capital Tehran, as well as religious ceremonies in the city of Qom.

The body was also transferred to Najaf and Karbala in Iraq to participate in reception ceremonies and religious visits, before being returned to Iran to be buried in the shrine of Imam Reza in the city of Mashhad, his birthplace.
