U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to deliver a speech during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner today (Friday), three months after the event was postponed due to an armed attempt to storm the venue with the intent to assassinate him, in an occasion that returns this year amid unprecedented security measures and escalating controversy over press freedom in the United States.

While the event organizers present Trump's participation as a message affirming the rejection of violence and the defense of freedom of expression, press organizations and media freedom advocates argue that his hosting contradicts what they describe as "his administration's anti-press policies."

An Assassination Attempt That Upended the Event

The annual dinner had been canceled on its original date after a man named Cole Thomas Allen, from California, attempted to storm the celebration hall, which housed hundreds of journalists alongside Trump and several members of his cabinet.

Secret Service agents managed to subdue the attacker after an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the injury of an officer, before the president and senior officials were evacuated and the event was definitively canceled.

Authorities later charged the suspect with the attempted assassination of the President of the United States and assaulting a federal employee with a deadly weapon.

Strict Security Measures

The postponed dinner will be held on Friday inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, instead of the Washington Hilton hotel which hosted the event for decades, amid tight security arrangements, while organizers confirmed that the banquet will be smaller in scale and more private compared to the canceled edition.

The event marks Trump's first participation in the White House Correspondents' Association dinner during his two presidential terms, as the previous dinner was canceled before he could deliver his highly anticipated speech, particularly given his history of attacking the media and repeatedly labeling it as "fake news."

The Message of "Freedom of Expression"

White House Correspondents' Association President Weijia Jiang stated that reorganizing the event represents "a clear message that violence has no place in American life, and that a free press will not be coerced into silence by threats."

The White House also considers Trump's participation as an affirmation of commitment to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

In contrast, eight media freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists, criticized the decision to hold the banquet with Trump in attendance, considering it contradictory to what they call his administration's escalation against media institutions.

More than 520 journalists signed an open letter demanding that the White House Correspondents' Association use the occasion to condemn what they described as the administration's attempts to undermine press freedom, rather than celebrating it.

The signatories pointed to recent subpoenas targeting the phone records of New York Times journalists and members of their families following the publication of a report regarding security vulnerabilities in the new Air Force One presidential aircraft, which was presented as a gift from Qatar.

The organizations also criticized Trump's previous threats to revoke the broadcast licenses of certain television channels he deems biased against him.

The letter stated: "We find it hypocritical to celebrate the First Amendment in front of someone who continuously attacks it without pause, and we demand that the White House Correspondents' Association condemn the administration's policies and defend one of the most vital pillars of American democracy."

Trump: I Might Change My Speech

For his part, Trump described the reorganization of the event as "proof of strength and resilience," but hinted at the possibility of changing the content of the speech he had intended to deliver before the event was canceled.

He wrote on his platform "Truth Social": "I don't know if I will repeat the same sharp remarks, at least towards certain people, but we will see soon, and in any case, the ticket for the event will be a hot one."

Notable Absences

First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are expected to miss the dinner, despite having attended the previously canceled edition.

A White House spokesperson explained, citing "Fox News Digital," that their absence is due to "prior commitments," while a number of U.S. cabinet members are expected to participate in the event.
