Police in Croatia said they found the bodies of three Egyptians in a river near the capital Zagreb on Tuesday, two days after they were reported missing following a swim, according to Agence France-Presse.

The police added in a statement that a friend of the three deceased reported their disappearance after last seeing them on Sunday, when they decided to go swimming in the Sava River near Zagreb.

The police launched a search operation with firefighting units and rescue services, and on Tuesday found two drowned bodies in the river and retrieved them.

Later, firefighters retrieved the third body, according to the statement.

Egyptians rank ninth among the largest foreign worker communities in the European Union member state.

Croatia issued more than 5,500 work and residence permits to Egyptian citizens in 2025.
