Congo announces increase in Ebola infections to 2,073 cases
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Democratic Republic of Congo today announced that the number of confirmed Ebola cases has risen to 2,073. Health authorities in the DRC stated that among these infections, 796 have resulted in deaths as of July 14, while contact tracing remains a major challenge, with only 76% coverage of exposed individuals. This comes as the World Health Organization declared that the actual number of Ebola infections in the DRC is likely at least double the officially reported figure. The DRC, located in Central Africa, has been battling an outbreak of the Ebola virus caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain since May 15.
