Joy in displacement camps
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed yesterday the importance of completing the implementation of the first phase requirements of US President Donald Trump's plan for Gaza, ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid and preparing conditions for transition to subsequent phases, leading to early recovery and reconstruction.
This came during a phone call made by Abdelatty with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, within the framework of ongoing coordination and consultation between the two sides on developments in the Palestinian territories. Abdelatty also emphasized the importance of enabling the Palestinian National Authority to assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, enhancing the unity of Palestinian institutions and their role in managing the next phase, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
During the call, the Egyptian and Palestinian sides discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip. The call also addressed preparations for the donor conference scheduled to be held in Brussels during July, as Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's full support for the Palestinian government and the need to mobilize the necessary international funding to strengthen the authority's capacity to provide basic services to the Palestinian people and support stability in the Palestinian territories. In Gaza, public squares, cafes, and displacement camp tents turned into gathering points to follow the Egypt vs. Australia match in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, where the Egyptian team brought moments of joy to Palestinians amid the war and daily suffering, according to local Palestinian media. As the match began, chants of supporters rose with Egypt's goal in the first half, a scene reflecting the depth of the connection between Palestinians and the Egyptian team. The Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported that a brief internet outage disrupted the viewing atmosphere before the fans resumed their celebration of the match. The Egyptian Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza allocated several equipped squares to enable Palestinians to watch the match, while screening venues saw large crowds, extending a recurring scene with every Egyptian team match; squares fill with supporters eager to cheer on the 'Pharaohs'. Followers celebrated the dedication of the win by Egyptian head coach Hossam Hassan to the Palestinian people, raising the Palestinian flag alongside the Egyptian flag.
