(CNN)-- Sources have revealed to CNN that mediators between the United States and Iran have proposed a 10-day ceasefire aimed at reducing tensions in an effort to encourage them to return to negotiations.

Throughout the conflict, Qatar and Pakistan have played leading roles in attempting to mediate hostilities.

It was not immediately clear how far the proposal had progressed, but sources said it would also include lifting restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran had fired on commercial vessels attempting to transit the waterway, while US President Donald Trump reimposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The White House stopped short of saying it would accept a cessation of hostilities, but allowed diplomatic efforts to continue.

A US official said: "At the moment, Trump is focused on making Iran pay for its violations of the memorandum of understanding and its ongoing terrorist acts in the Strait of Hormuz," referring to the memorandum signed by Washington and Tehran last month.

The official added: "In addition, he will make Iran pay for the killing of American soldiers, and these devastating strikes will continue until he sees otherwise, but negotiations between our countries continue."

On Monday, Trump vowed retaliation for the killing of soldiers, which included two soldiers killed after an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan.

Even before the soldiers were killed, Trump was considering options that would escalate the conflict, and the United States sent additional fighter jets and aerial refueling tankers to the region in anticipation of a potential escalation.
