At least 26 people have died this week in the northeastern Indian state of Assam due to floods following heavy rains, according to local authorities, who added that more thunderstorms and strong winds are expected to hit several areas of northern and eastern India on Wednesday.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said that 21 people died on Tuesday after severe floods hit the state, bringing the total death toll this week to 26. Authorities reported that the Brahmaputra River, one of the world's longest rivers, exceeded the danger level in several areas.

The state experiences damage from increased water flow almost annually during the monsoon season. Authorities in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh have warned of flash floods and flooding in some areas of the state on Wednesday.
