Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the negotiating team, Ismail Baghaei, stated that some groups within the US administration are preventing Washington from fulfilling its commitments contained in the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries.

The official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Baghaei on Saturday as saying that some groups within the US administration appear to be preventing their government from fulfilling its commitments, but ultimately the important thing is that the United States has not implemented its pledges.

Regarding the tension in the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei pointed out that Article Five of the memorandum of understanding stipulates that management of the strait shall be done in consultation with Oman and regional countries.

He added: "But the United States ignores that and tries to impose its control over this strategic waterway."

Baghaei warned that the international community is negatively affected in all respects by the war waged against Iran.

He noted that the repercussions of this war will continue in the future as well.

For about a week, the United States has been launching successive waves of strikes on sites inside Iran, while Tehran responds with attacks on sites and bases it says are US military in several countries in the region.

On June 18, 2026, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that included a cessation of military operations and the start of negotiations to reach a broader agreement.

However, US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 that the interim agreement had ended after three ships were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Washington to resume its strikes inside Iran amid escalating Iranian responses.

Washington demands ensuring freedom of navigation and its security in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran insists on imposing a mechanism to regulate the passage of ships through the strategic waterway, exacerbating fears of disruption of oil and gas exports from the region.
