Iran: Three Explosions Reported in Sirik
After US Announces New Wave of Attacks
Iran / Anadolu
Iranian media reported hearing three explosions in the city of Sirik, in Hormozgan province (south), following the US announcement of the start of a new wave of attacks.
The semi-official Mehr agency reported Friday evening that the sounds of explosions were heard in the city (overlooking the Strait of Hormuz) after Washington announced the start of a new attack.
For its part, Hormozgan province announced that the latest US attack on Sirik did not result in any casualties or material damage, according to the same source.
The province added that the city's infrastructure was not damaged by the recent attacks.
For days, the United States has been launching successive waves of strikes on sites inside Iran, while Tehran has been attacking what it says are US ships, facilities and military bases in a number of regional countries.
On Thursday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had carried out a new wave of strikes on Iranian military targets, using precision aircraft and munitions.
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding that included a cessation of military operations and the start of negotiations to reach a broader agreement.
But US President Donald Trump announced on July 8 the end of the interim agreement, after three ships were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Washington to resume its strikes inside Iran, amid escalating Iranian responses in the region.
Washington demands freedom and security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran insists on imposing a mechanism to regulate the passage of ships through the strategic waterway, raising fears of disruption to oil and gas exports from the region.
