Mamdani again threatens to study arrest of Netanyahu if he visits New York
(CNN)-- New York City Mayor Zoheran Mamdani said his office is still studying the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli prime minister visits the city to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
In an interview with The New York Times' audio podcast 'The Interview,' Mamdani said the legal department in his administration is seriously discussing the possibility of arresting Netanyahu, something he pledged to do during his election campaign.
Mamdani added: 'I think Prime Minister Netanyahu's place is The Hague. He is a war criminal who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court. You will find that this is an opinion held by many, only because of what his actions have caused over the past many years,' according to his statement.
When asked about what he believes the law allows him to do, Mamdani replied: 'That is an ongoing discussion with our legal department. However, what we have seen at the national level is a desire at times to create special laws and step outside the bounds of legality. That is not something that interests us.'
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders in 2024, charging them with war crimes during and after the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Both U.S. President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden condemned the ICC warrant.
The United States has not ratified the Rome Statute, which obligates states to arrest individuals subject to ICC arrest warrants. The Trump administration has escalated its long-standing battle against the court, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently vowing to 'dismantle' the court, accusing it of 'waging war on our country — not with bullets or missiles, but with the power of so-called international law.'
Mamdani is a fierce critic of the Israeli government, and has repeatedly criticized Israel's war in Gaza, describing it as 'genocide,' allegations that Israel denies.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz on Saturday described the NYC mayor's comments as 'pure political theater' and noted that the United States is not a member of the ICC.
In an interview with Sid Rosenberg of WABC earlier this week, Netanyahu dismissed concerns about Mamdani's calls for his arrest.
Israel's Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said on social media on Saturday that Netanyahu 'will come to New York, address the UN General Assembly with pride, and stand before the world to tell Israel's truth and its unwavering right to defend its citizens.'
