The US Treasury Department on Friday imposed a new package of sanctions related to Iran, targeting eight individuals and six entities that it said belong to a financial network linked to Mojtaba Khamenei and Iran's Revolutionary Guard, coinciding with the issuance of a general license allowing the termination of existing dealings with one of the companies on the sanctions list.

The US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said it added an Iranian businessman, along with his controlled company 'Smart Global Limited,' to the list of specially designated nationals and blocked persons. The sanctions also covered three Iranian exchange companies and their directors, as well as two companies in Hong Kong and the UAE.

At the same time, the office issued the general license for Iran, which permits necessary transactions to wind down existing business dealings with 'Smart Global Limited.'

OFAC stressed that this license does not represent a general exemption from the sanctions imposed on Iran, nor does it mean the removal of the company from sanctions lists, but rather provides a limited legal period to liquidate and terminate existing dealings with it, under the terms and restrictions set by the office.
