Agency: Iran may target 5 major ports in Gulf states; what are they?
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said Iran could target a "network of major ports" in Gulf states in response to US strikes on Iran's Chabahar port.
(CNN)-- Iran's semi-official Fars news agency said Iran could target a "network of major ports" in Gulf states in response to US strikes on Iran's Chabahar port.
The agency stated that "following the attack on Chabahar, 5 major regional ports have come within range of retaliation."
Fars added that the attack on Chabahar "effectively provided Tehran with a list of vital commercial ports hosting US interests across the region."
Fars said the ports include Jebel Ali, a massive container port in the United Arab Emirates, and Mina Salman in Bahrain, which houses the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.
The list also included Shuaiba port and Arifjan camp in Kuwait, which Fars described as a forward headquarters for US Central Command ground forces.
Six US servicemen were killed in a missile strike on Shuaiba port early in the conflict.
The list published by Fars also included Qatar's main Hamad port and King Fahd Industrial Port in Yanbu on Saudi Arabia's western coast, which has become a logistics hub for the US military.
Yanbu port has become more important during the war, serving as the main outlet for Saudi crude oil exports amid continued severe disruption to traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The port's berths—including those at King Fahd Industrial Port—have provided a vital alternative route for the world's largest crude oil exporter, helping to maintain global supplies and curb rising oil prices.
