Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez arrived in Algeria on Monday at the start of a working visit aimed at strengthening cooperation and expanding partnership between the two countries.

The Algerian Prime Ministry said in a statement that Sánchez arrived at Houari Boumediene International Airport as part of a 'working and friendship' visit to Algeria.

The statement added that the visit comes within the context of the joint commitment of the Algerian and Spanish leaderships to 'strengthen bilateral cooperation and expand areas of joint work to serve the interests of both countries.'

It explained that the visit will allow intensifying consultations and exchanging views on a number of regional and international issues of common interest, reflecting the two countries' will to elevate their relations and strengthen dialogue and coordination between them.

This is Sánchez's second visit to Algeria since he became head of the Spanish government in June 2018, following a previous visit in 2022.

The visit takes on special importance as it comes after turning the page on a diplomatic crisis that erupted between the two countries in 2022, following Sánchez's announcement of support for the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco to resolve the Sahara regional issue.

In March 2026, Algeria and Spain reactivated the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation, and fully resumed diplomatic relations, following a visit by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares to Algeria.
