Trump reinstates naval blockade on Iran and sets toll rate for passage through Hormuz
(CNN)-- US President Donald Trump said Monday that he will reimpose the blockade on Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and will impose fees on any other ships for passage.
In a post on Truth Social, he said: "The Strait of Hormuz is open, and will remain open, with or without Iran. We are reimposing the Iranian blockade, so-called because it only prevents ships of Iran or its proxies from entering or exiting. All other countries will enjoy fair and open use of the strait."
Trump reiterated that the United States will be the "protector" of the Strait of Hormuz and will impose a 20% toll on commercial shippers based on the value of their cargoes as compensation for the US securing the strait.
He said: "The United States of America will henceforth be known as the Protector of the Strait of Hormuz, but as such, and in fairness, it will be compensated at a rate of 20% on all transiting cargoes, for all costs necessary to perform the mission of providing safety and security to this very troubled part of the world."
The spokesman for the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command, Iran's highest joint military body, said Monday that the risk of regional war has increased following recent US strikes on Iran.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB quoted spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaqari, who condemned "repeated provocations and destabilizing actions by the United States," saying that "cooperation of some countries in the region has increased the risk of the war spreading across the region."
Zolfaqari affirmed that the Iranian military "will respond firmly to any obstruction or threat to the passage of commercial ships and oil tankers" by the United States, adding that Iran's Revolutionary Guard has clearly demonstrated this in recent days.
He also warned leaders of regional countries that "any cooperation with the United States or logistical support for its army will be considered an act of war against Iran's sovereignty and national security."
He added: "If the conflict expands, the fire of war will engulf the entire region."
This comes after the US military intensified its strikes on Iran over the weekend, and Iran responded by targeting sites in several countries in the region that it said were US bases.
