The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the Montreux Convention regarding the Straits is one of the main guarantees for peace, security and stability in the Black Sea.

This came in a statement issued by the Ministry on Monday on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the signing of the convention.

The Ministry explained that Turkey has been implementing the Montreux Convention, signed on July 20, 1936, with neutrality, transparency and accuracy for 90 years.

It added that the convention affirmed Turkey's sovereignty over the Turkish Straits, which are part of its territorial waters.

The Ministry pointed out that the agreement has remained in force without interruption in times of peace and war, and has proven its importance as one of the main guarantees for peace, security and stability in the Black Sea.

It concluded by saying: 'Turkey will continue to implement the Montreux Convention regarding the Straits with the same determination as it has done so far.'

The Montreux Convention, signed in 1936, allows the passage of warships of non-Black Sea states through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, provided that Turkey is notified of the passage 15 days in advance and that the ships stay in the Black Sea for no more than 21 days.
