(CNN) – US President Donald Trump entered the fray on Monday in the crisis between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani, who continued to insist on arresting Netanyahu should he arrive in New York due to the International Criminal Court's decision.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: 'Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, while he is in the United States.'

He continued: 'He is fighting the Islamic Republic of Iran, which recently killed 52,000 innocent protesters and has spent the last 47 years killing American soldiers and others.'

He went on to say: 'Those who deserve to be arrested are only those who have led Iran into this unprecedented spiral of death and destruction, something that previous presidents should have addressed years ago.'

Mamdani had stated in a New York Times podcast that the legal department of his state government is seriously discussing the possibility of arresting Netanyahu, something he pledged to pursue during his election campaign.

In the podcast 'The Interview,' Mamdani said: 'I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu's place is The Hague.' This was a reference to the seat of the International Court of Justice.

He added: 'He is a war criminal and has been indicted by the International Criminal Court. You will find that this is a common opinion among many given the impact of his actions over the past years.'

When asked what he believes the law allows him to do, Mamdani replied: 'This is an ongoing topic of discussion with our legal team. However, we have observed at the national level a sometimes desire to pass special laws and exceed the limits of the law. That is not what we want.'

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders in 2024, charging them with war crimes during and after Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Both US President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden condemned the ICC warrant.

The United States has not ratified the Rome Statute, which obligates states to arrest individuals subject to ICC arrest warrants. The Trump administration has escalated its long-running battle against the court, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently vowing to 'dismantle' the court, accusing it of 'waging war against our country – not with bullets or missiles, but with the power of so-called international law.'

Mamdani is a fierce critic of the Israeli government and has repeatedly criticized Israel's war in Gaza, describing it as 'genocide,' allegations that Israel denies.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz described the New York mayor's comments on Saturday as 'pure political theater' and noted that the United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court.

In an interview with Sid Rosenberg from WABC earlier this week, Netanyahu dismissed concerns over Mamdani's calls for his arrest.
