(CNN)-- US President Donald Trump said Monday that there is 'no tension' between the United States and Spain, despite his previous strong criticism of the country on the international stage.

Trump said he spoke with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez while attending the World Cup final in New Jersey.

He told reporters: 'I spoke with Spain and congratulated the team.' When asked if there was any tension, he replied: 'No, there is no tension. There is no tension with anyone.'

Trump had previously criticized Spain for not spending enough on defense and for refusing to allow the use of its military bases in the war with Iran.

He also criticized it earlier this month for being the only NATO member that refused to commit to the alliance's increased spending targets.

However, Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the field to present the trophy to Spain after they defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final.

Trump also hung medals around the necks of players from both competing teams after the final.
