Trump praises Nigeria's efforts in combating violence against Christians
Trump wrote: 'It is a true honor to stand by your side in the war against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.'
Donald Trump praised Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for the measures taken to combat violence, according to a letter published by the Nigerian presidency yesterday Wednesday, contrary to the threats the US president made late last year regarding the treatment of Christians there.
The letter, dated July 6, said Trump stated he appreciates 'the resolute leadership shown by Tinubu on behalf of the Nigerian people' and praised his efforts to address 'violence affecting Christian populations.' Trump wrote: 'It is a true honor to stand by your side in the war against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous.'
The letter indicates an improvement in relations between Abuja and Washington since Trump accused the African government last November of failing to protect Christians from extremist violence and threatened to cut aid to Nigeria and take military action.
Nigeria rejected these accusations and said insecurity affects citizens of all religions.
