Trump: We Will Guard the Strait of Hormuz and Charge Fees for It
US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will take control and secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz, noting that his country will charge fees for guarding this vital waterway through which about 20% of global oil supplies pass.
Trump said in an interview with Fox News, speaking about Iran: 'They are bad people,' adding: 'We will be the guards of the strait.'
Trump touched on the memorandum of understanding with Iran, saying: 'We had an agreement and they violated it,' stressing that Washington will assume full responsibility for securing the strait.
In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry earlier the same day announced that it is seeking to reach a joint mechanism with Oman regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz, accusing US pressures of hindering these efforts.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei clarified that Tehran will not implement its obligations under the memorandum of understanding with Washington unless the US side fulfills its commitments.
