Historic nuclear agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and America

The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the government of the United States of America signed a cooperation agreement in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy between the two countries, as part of the strategic partnership that binds the two friendly nations, and building on what was announced during the visit of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister - may God protect him - to the United States of America last November, regarding the completion of negotiations on cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and advanced technologies.

The agreement, signed by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy, and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and support the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technologies, contributing to the development of joint cooperation in accordance with the highest international standards related to nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation, reflecting the shared vision of the two countries to expand cooperation in the fields of energy and future technologies and support sustainable development.

The agreement also represents an extension of existing cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector, supporting efforts to diversify energy sources, develop advanced technologies, and enhance opportunities for cooperation and investment to achieve the common interests of the two friendly nations.

The US Department of Energy announced on Wednesday that the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a historic nuclear cooperation agreement and a bilateral safeguards agreement.

The US Department of Energy said: "Signing of the 123 Agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, along with a bilateral safeguards agreement."

It added: "The two agreements lay the legal foundation for a multi-decade partnership and advance economic and strategic goals. The US-Saudi partnership agreement will be submitted to Congress for review."

It continued: "The partnership with Saudi Arabia will expand US nuclear technology exports."

It further said: "The 123 Agreement ensures a broad role for US companies in the Saudi nuclear energy program. The partnership aims to support Saudi Arabia's peaceful nuclear energy needs. The two agreements affirm commitment to nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation standards."

It added: "The agreement builds on Trump's executive order on deploying advanced nuclear reactor technologies and boosting US nuclear technology exports."
