U.S. House of Representatives approves record military spending package

The U.S. House of Representatives, by a narrow margin, passed a bill paving the way for a significant increase in military spending.

The bill authorizes a record military funding package worth $1.15 trillion in 2027. In the current fiscal year 2026, about $900 billion was allocated for defense.

The bill includes a salary increase for armed forces personnel of between 5% and 7%, an increase in the size of the active forces, and stipulates renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

The bill, passed with 216 votes in favor and 212 against, will now move to the Senate for a second vote before being sent to the office of U.S. President Donald Trump.
