US military launches new strikes on Iran.. Local media: explosions shake Bandar Abbas
(CNN)-- The US military announced Thursday that the United States launched a new wave of airstrikes on Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM), headquartered in Tampa, Florida, and responsible for overseeing US forces involved in the conflict, announced the strikes via a social media post.
The command said the airstrikes, which began around 9:30 p.m. local time Thursday (2:00 p.m. Eastern Time), aim to "further degrade Iranian military capabilities."
In response, Iran's official state broadcasting authority reported Thursday evening local time hearing three explosions in the western part of Bandar Abbas, a major port city on Iran's southern coast.
The authority added that the source of the explosions remains unknown.
CENTCOM had concluded a wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday evening, targeting Iranian command centers, air defense sites, missile and drone capabilities, and coastal surveillance facilities, with the aim of further undermining Iran's ability to threaten civilian sailors aboard commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier Thursday morning, US forces launched strikes targeting coastal defense sites and cruise missiles on Greater Tunb Island, during a 90-minute wave.
