The Pakistani government is considering the possibility of returning to implementing fuel rationing and austerity measures as early as this week or next week, as pressures on oil prices and foreign exchange reserves escalate due to renewed fighting in the Middle East.

At the same time, the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel - the two main petroleum products - will only be revised on working days, although this step has been presented as a move towards price liberalization and daily pricing.

Retail fuel selling prices will be announced every working day, from Monday to Friday, and not on Saturdays and Sundays, according to the German news agency dpa.

A senior government official said that the prices announced on Friday will actually remain in effect for the following three days, namely Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

He added that price revisions may be limited to four days a week when the government eventually shifts to implementing fuel rationing and austerity measures, possibly this week or next week, depending on regional conditions and obtaining official cabinet approval.
