A US official told Axios that President Donald Trump approved new strikes against Iran and ordered them carried out while he was in Turkey to attend the NATO summit, in response to Iran's attack on civilian ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The official said Trump held a meeting in Ankara that included Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who had accompanied him on the presidential plane.

Also participating were Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine and other officials who were already in Ankara for the summit.

The US official said the strikes came 'as a direct result of international terrorism committed by Iran against civilian ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians are aware of the consequences of their reckless actions, yet they chose to carry out these attacks.'

80 Targets in Iran

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces completed a new round of offensive strikes against Iran early Wednesday, targeting more than 80 targets with precision munitions, in an immediate response to the latest Iranian attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM added that US forces targeted Iranian air defense systems, command and control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile capabilities, and more than 60 small boats belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in and near the strait.

The command explained that the strikes aim to weaken Iran's ability to continue attacking international trade traffic through the international commercial corridor.

Tehran Vows to Retaliate

The General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said early Wednesday that Tehran will not allow US interference in the management of the Strait of Hormuz.

It added that the Iranian armed forces will deliver an 'overwhelming response' to the US attacks. It considered that the US military targeted parts of southern Iran in what it called 'blatant aggression.'

Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused the United States of 'committing major violations of the memorandum of understanding on ending the war.'

He said the US 'violated Iranian arrangements regarding the Strait of Hormuz. It continued issuing threats of additional strikes, re-imposed sanctions on Iran's oil sector, launched attacks on southern Iran, while Israeli aggression against Lebanon continued.'

Mohsen Rezaei, an advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader, said Trump intends to launch a new attack on Iran, adding: 'We are fully prepared.'
