Manchester United prepares for the new season.

Boldhaven Management, a London-based investment management firm, disclosed that it holds a 5.6% stake in Manchester United's Class A shares, after accumulating approximately 3.1 million shares.

According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the firm's stake exceeded the 5% threshold that requires investors to file a regulatory disclosure.

According to Sportico, Boldhaven became the second-largest institutional holder of Manchester United shares, behind Ariel Investments, which owns 9.05 million shares.

Boldhaven was founded in 2017 by Ronald Sofer and describes itself as an alternative investment management firm that relies on fundamental research, long-term investing, and a focus on intrinsic value.

It is not clear from the disclosure how large a stake the firm held before crossing the 5% threshold, which requires regulatory disclosure in the United States.

Ownership structure

The Glazer family and Ineos Group chairman Jim Ratcliffe remain the largest shareholders in Manchester United, controlling the club through Class B shares that carry voting rights equivalent to 10 times those of Class A shares.

Ratcliffe acquired a mix of both share classes in 2024, after the club hired the Raine Group in 2022 to explore sale options.

Performance improvement

Manchester United's stock has risen about 84% from its record low in April 2025, after the team finished last season in third place in the English Premier League, securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

The club posted operating profit of $50.5 million in the first nine months of the fiscal year, compared to a loss of $4.3 million in the same period last year, despite incurring exceptional costs related to the dismissal of former coach Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff.

According to Sportico, Manchester United ranked third in the ranking of the most valuable football clubs in the world, with a value of $6.47 billion, behind Real Madrid at $7.7 billion and Barcelona at $6.65 billion.
