Economy / Jazan Employs Its Agricultural Potential in a Landmark Project for Greenhouses and Tropical Fruits
Jizan, Muharram 24, 1448 AH, corresponding to July 9, 2026 (SPA) - As the Kingdom moves toward building a more efficient and sustainable agricultural sector, the Jazan region emerges as one of the most promising destinations for agricultural investment, leveraging its natural endowments and favorable climate for the production of tropical fruits. It is now witnessing the implementation of a landmark project for greenhouses and smart agriculture with investments exceeding 600 million riyals, a step that enhances food security and supports the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in diversifying the economy and increasing the agricultural sector's contribution to development. The project is part of the efforts of the Strategic Office for the Development of Jazan Region to empower high-quality investments and attract global expertise, by turning investment opportunities into practical partnerships that contribute to the transfer of modern technologies and localization of knowledge, thereby raising agricultural production efficiency and enhancing the region's competitiveness at local and regional levels. The project is established on a total area of 1 million square meters, including 500,000 square meters allocated for high-tech greenhouses and another 500,000 square meters for tropical fruit production, benefiting from the comparative advantages of Jazan, which make it one of the Kingdom's most qualified regions for expanding the production of tropical crops and building an integrated value chain from production to manufacturing and export. The project is based on the application of the latest smart agriculture technologies, through advanced climate management systems inside greenhouses, closed irrigation systems for water recycling, and modern techniques that help reduce water consumption by up to 75%, enhancing the efficiency of natural resource use and aligning with environmental sustainability trends. Technology transfer is one of the project's key pillars, as it includes a Saudi-Dutch partnership, allowing the transfer of best global practices and expertise to the Jazan region, supporting the localization of modern agricultural technologies and enhancing local content in this sector. The Strategic Office for the Development of Jazan Region plays a pivotal role in the project by building partnerships between local investors and international expertise, and enabling cooperation among various stakeholders, contributing to attracting high-quality investments and creating an attractive environment for value-added agricultural projects. The project is expected to provide more than 2,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, in addition to stimulating investments in agricultural value chains, and supporting industries and services related to agricultural production, such as packaging, refrigeration, logistics services, and food manufacturing, thereby enhancing the economic impact of the project in the region. The project embodies Jazan's direction to establish itself as a national center for modern agriculture, by combining natural endowments, advanced technologies, and international partnerships, thereby supporting food security, reducing reliance on imports, opening new horizons for investment, manufacturing, and export, and serving as a model for transforming the region's competitive advantages into sustainable development projects with long-term economic impact. It is noteworthy that the project is based on a solid agricultural base in the Jazan region, which is one of the Kingdom's leading regions in tropical fruit production, with more than 3 million fruit trees producing over 113,000 tons annually. This enhances the feasibility of expanding smart agriculture and greenhouse technologies and raises the competitiveness of the agricultural sector in the region. // End // 15:03 PM 0103
