Rafha, Safar 6, 1448 AH corresponding to July 20, 2026 SPA -- The "Tu'us Al-Hanatain" sand formations, located alongside the new Rafha-Hail road, 160 kilometers southwest of Rafha, are among the most prominent natural landmarks in the region due to their towering sand dunes and picturesque desert formations, as well as their connection to one of the historical trade routes in northern Arabia. Abdulrahman Al-Twaijri, a member of the Antiquities Association, told SPA that the Tu'us Al-Hanatain lie along one of the historical trade routes, known as the "Western Trade Route," which runs alongside the Nafud desert from Turaba to Al-Hayania, then crosses Al-Huzul, Al-Majamir, and Al-Ruhaymi, reaching Kufa. He explained that this route had fewer water sources and was more arduous, but it was distinguished by a higher level of security due to its distance from main roads, making it a preferred choice for small caravans and travelers. He stated that the eastern route, known as the Kufi Hajj Road ("Darb Zubaydah"), was the most used due to the availability of water sources and clarity of its features, thanks to the structures built along it during the Abbasid era, including reservoirs and buildings, making it the main path for large caravans. He pointed out that the two sand dunes of Al-Hanatain are clearly visible from long distances and are surrounded by sand dunes of varying heights, giving the site a distinctive aesthetic character, noting that the Nafud of Al-Hanatain is an extension of what was anciently known as the "Alij" sands, famous for the density and expanse of its dunes, to the extent that it became a proverb for distances and difficulty of crossing, as it was said in the past: "Between you and me lies the Alij sand." He added that Yaqut al-Hamawi mentioned in his book "Mu'jam al-Buldan" the two red dunes of Al-Hanatain, stating they are two red sand hills from Alij sand, likened to henna due to their reddish hue.
