Environment / "Environment Ministry": Afforestation is a key pillar for lowering temperatures, improving quality of life, and enhancing environmental sustainability

Riyadh, صفر 08, 1448 AH corresponding to July 22, 2026 AD, SPA - The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has affirmed that afforestation is one of the most prominent natural and effective solutions to mitigate the effects of high temperatures during the summer season, pointing to the role played by trees in moderating the atmosphere, improving air quality, and enhancing environmental sustainability, in alignment with Saudi Vision 2030. The Ministry explained that afforestation plays an important role in helping to reduce temperatures by providing shade, limiting heat absorption in pavements and surfaces, alongside the transpiration process through which trees release water vapor, which helps cool the surrounding air and improve the quality of life in cities, parks, and open spaces. This provides suitable environments for picnics, practicing outdoor activities, and encouraging physical activity. Furthermore, afforestation helps absorb an average of up to 150 kg of carbon dioxide annually.

The Ministry noted that increasing green spaces contributes to making an effective impact that positively reflects on human health by reducing stress and improving mental health, in addition to improving quality of life by purifying the air from pollutants—which reduces diseases—limiting noise pollution, and contributing effectively to stormwater management. This is alongside supporting biodiversity by providing vital habitats for biological diversity and supporting natural pollinators.

The Ministry urged members of society on the importance of choosing local trees, as they are more adapted to the Kingdom's climatic conditions and require less water, thereby enhancing the efficiency of natural resource utilization and contributing to boosting the success and sustainability of afforestation projects. It called for following proper agricultural practices to preserve trees during the summer season, including choosing the appropriate timing for irrigation, in addition to using drip irrigation systems, which helps reduce water loss through evaporation by up to 50% compared to traditional irrigation systems. The Ministry also indicated that organic mulch around trees enhances soil moisture conservation, regulates temperatures, and limits weed growth.

The Ministry emphasized that afforestation represents a long-term investment in the environment, humanity, and the future of coming generations, as it contributes to enhancing the urban landscape and elevating the quality of life. // End // 11:07 AM 0052
