Riyadh, Safar 08, 1448 AH corresponding to July 22, 2026, SPA The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture confirmed that afforestation is one of the most prominent natural and effective solutions in mitigating the effects of high temperatures during the summer season, pointing to the role that trees play in cooling the atmosphere, improving air quality, and enhancing environmental sustainability, in line with Saudi Vision 2030. The Ministry explained that afforestation plays an important role in contributing to lowering temperatures by providing shade, reducing heat absorption in sidewalks and surfaces, in addition to the transpiration process through which trees release water vapor, which helps cool the surrounding air, and improve the quality of life in cities, parks, and open spaces; thus providing suitable environments for recreation, outdoor activities, and encouraging physical activity. Afforestation also helps absorb up to an average of 150 kg of carbon dioxide annually. The Ministry indicated that increasing green spaces contributes to an effective impact that positively reflects on human health by reducing stress and improving mental health, in addition to improving the quality of life by purifying the air from pollutants, thereby reducing diseases, reducing noise pollution, and effectively contributing to rainwater management, as well as supporting biodiversity by providing vital habitats for biodiversity and supporting natural pollinators. The Ministry urged community members to emphasize the importance of selecting local trees, as they are more adapted to the climatic conditions in the Kingdom and require less water, enhancing the efficiency of natural resource use and contributing to enhancing the success and sustainability of afforestation projects. It called for following proper agricultural practices to preserve trees during the summer season, including choosing the appropriate timing for irrigation, in addition to using drip irrigation systems; which contribute to reducing water loss through evaporation by up to 50% compared to traditional irrigation systems. It stated that the organic mulch around trees enhances soil moisture retention, regulates temperatures, and limits weed growth. The Ministry affirmed that afforestation represents a long-term investment in the environment, people, and the future of generations to come, as it contributes to enhancing the urban landscape and improving the quality of life. // End // 11:07 T M 0052
