Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that Tehran chose to enter negotiations with the United States despite its conviction that war was imminent, considering that any chance to avoid confrontation, even if its success rate does not exceed 10%, is worth trying.

Araqchi said, in an interview featured in the documentary "The Story of War 2" reported by ISNA news agency, that the goal of the negotiations was to find a path that achieves Iran's demands away from the military option, explaining that diplomatic solutions remain less costly and risky if they can achieve the desired results.

He added that Iran also sought to prove that it had exhausted all political avenues to the international community and domestic public opinion, so as not to be later accused of refusing negotiations or causing the outbreak of war.

In contrast, Araqchi noted that the Iranian leadership expected war to break out, so the negotiations did not affect the level of military readiness, stressing that the armed forces and the government continued to prepare for confrontation concurrently with the talks.

He explained that the two sides held three rounds of negotiations, with the third round discussing a US proposal to suspend uranium enrichment for several years. However, the Iranian delegation rejected the proposal, affirming its country's commitment to its right to enrich, despite the damage to its nuclear facilities, before the situation later turned towards military escalation.
