(CNN)-- The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday that it launched new strikes on Iran.

CENTCOM said: "Our forces have begun striking military targets in Iran, for the 11th consecutive night."

It added that "the strikes aim to continue weakening Iranian military capabilities" that it uses to attack ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes came as the Joint Command of the Iranian Armed Forces (Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters) warned that any American attack on Iranian nuclear facilities or other sensitive sites would be considered "an expansion of the war in the region," according to a statement carried by the official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

US President Donald Trump stated Tuesday that the United States will "strike the Mount Axe site very soon."

This fortified underground complex is located about one mile south of the city of Natanz in central Iran, and was declared to the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2020 as a future facility for assembling centrifuges used in nuclear fuel production.
