The Egyptian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday the arrest of a woman in her forties accused of killing her elderly mother and dismembering her body inside a residential apartment in Alexandria Governorate, following the spread of posts on social media about finding the victim's head in a freezer and body parts in bags inside the apartment.

This incident is among the rare domestic violence crimes that shake Egyptian society, raising questions about the motives behind family disputes.

According to the Interior Ministry statement, the First Montazah Police Station received a report on July 20 of this year about the discovery of parts of a 70-year-old woman's body inside a residential apartment within the station's jurisdiction.

It added that investigations revealed that the victim's daughter, who lived with her in the same apartment, was behind the incident, noting that she was arrested at her hideout.

The accused confessed during interrogations to committing the act, attributing it to old disputes with her mother and "mistreatment" as she claimed.

According to the statement, the accused explained that a verbal argument broke out between them on July 17 of this year inside the apartment, escalating into beating and choking her mother until death.

The accused stated that she began dismembering the body over two days using a sharp tool that the police seized, then fled fearing the crime would be exposed.

Egyptian authorities continue investigating the circumstances of the crime, with investigations ongoing to uncover all details. The case has sparked widespread controversy on social media, with activists demanding the maximum penalty for the accused. The case also highlights the challenges of violence against the elderly within Egyptian families. The accused is expected to be referred to the Public Prosecution to complete investigations and determine her legal fate.
