A man was arrested after setting off an incendiary device in front of a building in New York that houses federal immigration authorities.

Footage captured by witnesses and posted on social media showed smoke rising on the sidewalk in front of the building located in Manhattan.

FBI Director Kash Patel said on X: "This morning, an individual used an incendiary device in front of 26 Federal Plaza in New York. The suspect is now in custody." He noted that two people sustained minor injuries and announced that the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating the incident. The building houses immigration courts and the New York field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency tasked with implementing President Donald Trump's sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration.

Democratic condemnation of the incident

In a statement, Jeffries, a New York congressman, said: "Acts of terrorism and violence have no place in our city, and we will never tolerate them." He added: "The person responsible for this act must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
