The Saudi Masam project for mine clearance in Yemen announced today (Thursday) the destruction of 5,977 pieces of ammunition, mines, and explosives from unexploded war remnants in the Bab el-Mandeb area of Taiz Governorate in western Yemen, as part of the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to reduce risks threatening civilians.

The project stated in a statement that the destruction operation included 142 projectiles of various types, 2,758 detonators, 2,998 assorted ammunition pieces, in addition to 14 anti-personnel mines, 36 anti-tank mines, 9 hand grenades, 6 rockets, 8 improvised explosive devices, and 6 warheads, after completing all approved technical safety procedures.

Engineer Adeeb Rajab, commander of the second special task force in the Masam project, confirmed that this quantity represents the outcome of what the project teams collected over the past month from various areas of Yemen's western coast, indicating that the demining teams recovered these remnants from villages, farms, and sheep pastures, as they posed a direct threat to civilians, especially children, farmers, and herders.

The commander, whose team supervised the destruction operation, pointed out that it was carried out according to precise technical procedures, starting with digging a deep pit and preparing it to contain the ammunition, then stacking them in successive layers, explaining that the latest operation included 8 layers of war remnants.

Rajab said: Small-sized ammunition is placed in the lower layers, while highly explosive materials are placed on top, ensuring a sufficient explosion to completely destroy all remnants and prevent any parts that could pose a future risk from remaining, calling on citizens in the western coastal areas not to approach any suspicious objects or war remnants or attempt to move or tamper with them, given the great danger they pose to lives.

The commander of the second special task force urged residents to immediately report any war remnants to Masam project teams or security agencies and local authorities, to ensure they are dealt with according to safe procedures and protect civilians from the dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance.

The Masam project continues to carry out mine clearance and destruction of war remnants in several Yemeni governorates, amid the continued spread of unexploded ordnance in wide areas and the ongoing threat it poses to residents and daily life.

It is noteworthy that the work of the Masam project for mine clearance in Yemen is not limited to removing mines, dismantling booby traps and explosive ambushes, and destroying them, but also implements awareness campaigns for civilians in several cities and rural villages in various liberated Yemeni governorates, which enhances citizens' awareness of the danger of this scourge to their lives and spares them the tragedies that have afflicted thousands of families over the past years as a result of the Houthi militia turning lands, roads, mountains, schools, public and private facilities, beaches, and seas in Yemen into minefields that target civilians, shepherds, students, fishermen, car and motorcycle drivers.
