Syrian authorities announced the seizure of 226 bombs inside a vehicle heading to Lebanon, in the latest operation reported by Damascus as part of its efforts to combat smuggling.

The Customs Office of Jdeidet Yabous reported today (Tuesday) that 226 bombs of the type 'RGC' were found hidden securely in secret compartments in one of the vehicles heading to Lebanese territory, as part of the General Authority for Ports and Customs' efforts to combat smuggling and enhance border security.

Last week, Syrian authorities announced the thwarting of an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of weapons and missiles across the border with Iraq, which was on its way to Lebanon for what they described as 'Hezbollah militia'.

They confirmed that they monitored a vehicle parked within the border area under suspicious circumstances, which was then subjected to inspection, resulting in the seizure of a weapons shipment that included long-range missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, and drones.

Sources revealed that the seized shipment included about 150 explosive-laden drones, along with missiles, explosive shells, and sophisticated weapons, and was on its way from Iraq to Lebanon via Syrian territory.

The sources added that the Syrian authorities managed to seize the shipment at the Syrian-Iraqi border before it entered deep into Syrian territory, in a security operation carried out after intelligence monitoring, while investigations are still ongoing to identify the parties behind the smuggling attempt and the route of the weapons transfer.

This operation comes amid the tightening of security measures by Syrian authorities at the crossings and borders, coinciding with rising regional tensions and the widening confrontation between the United States and Iran, along with concerns about the movement of weapons across the region.
