The General Authority for Land Ports and Customs in Syria seized on Tuesday 226 grenades of the type "RPG" that were prepared for smuggling into Lebanese territory.

In an official statement, the authority explained that the Customs Secretariat of Jdeidet Yabous managed to seize the shipment, which was tightly hidden in secret compartments inside a car heading towards Lebanon, during routine border inspection operations.

This operation comes days after Syrian authorities revealed last Thursday details of foiling an attempt to smuggle a huge shipment of sophisticated weapons across the border with Iraq, saying it was intended to be smuggled to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The authorities indicated that the first seizure operation came "after spotting a vehicle parked within the border area under suspicious circumstances, where it was subjected to inspection," resulting in the seizure of a shipment that included long-range missiles, guided anti-tank missiles, and drones.

Preliminary investigations, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry, revealed that "the shipment was prepared to transit through Syrian territory towards Lebanon for the benefit of the Hezbollah militia."
