Egyptian security authorities have revealed the truth behind a video that sparked wide interaction on social media platforms, which was claimed to document the smuggling of a number of foreigners into the country. Investigations showed that the truck was transporting a huge shipment of quartz stones used in gold extraction, as part of an illegal activity of prospecting for the precious metal.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior explained that the circulated video showed a truck driver smuggling people of foreign nationality inside Qena Governorate, but investigations and actual arrest revealed a completely different surprise from what was circulated.

A security force from the Qena Police Department managed to stop the truck and arrest its driver, an Egyptian driver, accompanied by 4 people holding the nationality of a foreign country, while inside the vehicle a shipment weighing about 6 tons of quartz stones was found, which are rocks containing ores from which gold is extracted.

When confronting the defendants, it turned out that the matter was not about smuggling expats, as they confessed to practicing an illegal activity of prospecting for gold ore within the Red Sea Governorate, and that the seized quartz stones were in their possession for use in extracting the precious metal by illegal methods.

As a result, security authorities seized the truck and the seized shipment, and took legal measures against the defendants, before referring the incident to the Public Prosecution to conduct investigations.
