A Kuwaiti Champion: A Symbol of Defiance and the Success of Unyielding Will Despite Disability
This article profiles Adela Hamad Ahmed Hussein Al-Roumi, a celebrated Kuwaiti Paralympic athlete whose extraordinary career, marked by over 100 international medals, serves as an inspiring testament to human resilience and determination in the face of physical challenges.
With a heart filled with pride and words inspired by her defiance and will, I begin, after praising and thanking God Almighty, by highlighting a beautiful Kuwaiti model of success despite challenges and difficult circumstances. She is a fine example for all our brothers, sisters, and children—people of determination (as we should call them, rather than 'people with special needs')—a role model for anyone who wishes to embody the spirit of defiance and persistence in success, and a symbol of resilience for anyone whose resolve falters on the path to achieving their dream. In fact, it is fair to say that she is a unique model that Kuwait has presented to the entire world, and the Kuwaiti sports community, not just the honorable Al-Roumi family, has every right to be proud of her. Here, I am talking about the Kuwaiti Olympic champion Adela Hamad Ahmed Hussein Al-Roumi, a star of Kuwaiti sports for people of determination, who raised the Kuwaiti flag in many international forums and Olympic competitions, becoming a long-term ambassador for Kuwaiti sports, particularly for those with special needs. The champion Adela Al-Roumi ascended the podiums, proving to the whole world that she is a champion despite the challenges of physical disability, and determined despite the hardships.
Behind every gold, silver, or bronze medal she won lie stories of struggle, persistence, and resilience. Behind every time she stood on the podium, there were courageous national stances proving her spirit of challenge and heroism. Every time she represented Kuwait in global forums, she displayed moments of dignity and determination that overcame the difficult and shattered the impossible, thanks to the grace and guidance of God Almighty.
Before discussing some of her beautiful anecdotes, it is appropriate to provide a brief overview of her most prominent athletic achievements, despite the physical disability that has accompanied her since early childhood:
Throughout her busy athletic career, champion Adela Al-Roumi has received more than 100 international medals, ranging from gold and silver to bronze. She also won five cups and received numerous certificates of appreciation from various local and international organizations. She was chosen as one of the top 10 athletes worldwide and was honored in many international forums and capitals, including a major ceremony in the Swiss city of Biel, among many other awards and titles that are difficult to list here, which the exceptional Kuwaiti champion Adela Hamad Al-Roumi earned deservedly in numerous local, regional, and global forums. As a non-exhaustive example, I will mention only three brief anecdotes to indicate the spirit of persistence, challenge, and strong resolve possessed by the Kuwaiti champion Adela Hamad Hussein Al-Roumi. As a simple form of recognition, I will leave the field for champion Adela Al-Roumi to tell them herself. When asked about the most difficult situations she went through during her heroic journey and busy career, she simply replied: 'There are many situations that influenced my journey and my life in general,' and among the most prominent of these (quoting a press article by Nada Al-Rifai, published on the website 'Kuwait History'):
The first situation:
'When I was about twelve years old, I visited a sports camp for people with special needs. I was dazzled by the spirit of enthusiasm and persistence in training among the male and female athletes, and a strong sense of challenge and insistence on success was born within me. Since that time, my only dream became to be like them and to reach the global stage. From that moment, I began to train and strive toward achieving my desired goal. With God's help and guidance, I became a world champion, and I set one motto before me: 'In life, nothing is impossible... If you want to achieve something, you will achieve it with resolve and persistence, God willing, when you exert your best effort.'
The second situation:
'One of the most difficult and ironic situations at the same time is that while I was performing weightlifting exercises one time, specifically when I was lifting a weight of 110 kilograms, the bar (a solid iron rod with weights on both ends) fell on my nose, and I suffered a double fracture. I immediately went to the hospital for X-rays and necessary first aid. Despite the severe injury I suffered, the treating doctor was surprised by my lack of concern for what happened; in fact, I simply did not ask him about my health condition or my new situation with the injury. All that occupied my mind was: when can I return to training and weightlifting exercises again?!'
The third situation:
'This situation occurred during my participation in an Olympic tournament. I was representing my beloved country, Kuwait, in weightlifting, and there was strong competition between me and one of the contestants. I had a great determination to win against that contestant and achieve a new milestone for myself and my beloved country, Kuwait. However, this contestant was in a weight class higher than mine, so I was forced to drink more than a liter of water before the start of the competition so that my weight would increase and I could enter the same class as her. This is exactly what happened, thanks to God. I entered the same category with her, and with this persistence to win and that high spirit and great determination, I was able to defeat her and all the contestants in this category. I stood on the podium with my wheelchair, holding the Kuwaiti flag aloft, and won the gold medal. To God be the glory, and to Him be praise and thanks.'
In concluding our journey with the inspiring champion Adela Hamad Hussein Al-Roumi, it becomes clear to us that resolve is her weapon that shattered the impossible, and her heroism is the courage that made her a symbol of challenge and pride amidst all difficulties. She has proven, with the help of God Almighty, that the will is stronger than any restraint, and that when she ascended the platforms of glory, she lifted all our spirits to the highest limit. Congratulations to beloved Kuwait for such a global Kuwaiti champion, congratulations to champion Adela for this beautiful spirit and strong, unyielding resolve, and congratulations to us, the people of Kuwait, for this honorable athletic model that we boast of to the entire world. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
