(CNN)-- Accounts and pages on social media promoted a video clip, claiming it shows scenes of a fire breaking out at a power station in Kuwait due to Iranian attacks.

The video went viral on several social platforms, including X and Facebook, driven by a misleading description saying: "Breaking news.. Unstoppable fire at Al-Sabiya Kuwaiti power station after being targeted by Iranian missiles."

The 23-second video shows flames engulfing what appears to be a building surrounded by a metal fence, while the clip's promoters attached the Kuwaiti flag.

CNN Arabic's verification revealed that the video is old and is not related to Iran's attacks on neighboring Gulf states amid the repercussions of the recent escalation cycle with the United States.

By breaking the video into still frames and using reverse image search, we found a longer version (1 minute and 21 seconds) posted on Facebook on August 12, 2025.

At that time, Jordanian journalist Bilal Al-Ajarmeh posted the video on his personal Facebook page, commenting: "There is no power nor strength except with God.. A fire in the Al-Subaihi power transformer, and thank God there are no injuries."

Jordan's official Al-Mamlaka TV channel reported then that civil defense crews "extinguished a fire that broke out at the Al-Subaihi transformer station" in Balqa Governorate, northwest of the capital Amman. Later, the electricity company announced the restoration of service to the station.

The spread of the viral video suggests it may be part of a disinformation campaign, as the clip was repeatedly posted within a short time frame with uniform text comments.

Upon examining the accounts that shared the video, their intense activity in following developments of the war in the region was notable, in addition to posting misleading videos, while their posts reflect a tendency to express Iranian interests.

The video resurfaced again after the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy announced earlier on Sunday that a power generation and water desalination plant in Kuwait had been subjected to an Iranian attack for the second time in two days.

Water desalination plants, which convert seawater into drinking water, are vital in the Middle East, and some countries in the region rely almost entirely on desalination. In Kuwait, desalination covers about 90% of freshwater needs.

Gulf states had been subjected to Iranian attacks since the collapse of the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran a week ago. Washington launched new strikes against Iran.
