After Laporta's statements... Has Atletico Madrid's stance on selling Julian Alvarez changed?
Atletico Madrid maintains its stance against selling Julian Alvarez despite Barcelona president Laporta's comments. The club denies being forced to sell, while Arsenal emerges as a potential destination if Alvarez leaves.
A press report revealed on Monday Atletico Madrid's stance regarding statements made by Barcelona president Joan Laporta about their player Julian Alvarez.
Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, arrived in the American city of Dallas, ready to watch the decisive match between Spain and France in the semi-finals of the Football World Cup, scheduled for Tuesday evening.
He spoke about Alvarez, praising his performance against Switzerland, but adopted a cautious tone regarding the deal: "We made a huge offer that pleases the coach and the technical staff, but it is time-limited, not open-ended."
He added: "I personally communicated with Atletico's leadership and made it clear that our offer will remain valid until they find a suitable replacement, and we will not exert any pressure on them," while refusing to disclose the financial value of the offer.
Nevertheless, newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Atletico does not want the player to leave, especially to Barcelona, something they completely rule out. Moreover, they believe Barcelona is starting to accept the fact that Julian will not join them.
It confirmed that they have not issued any significant reaction to the Barcelona president's statements because the situation remains unchanged.
But some other messages are private. Now it is rumored that Atletico Madrid is forced to sell players to cover the €80 million they have already spent on signings, thus being able to register new players.
Nothing could be further from the truth, because the signings of Grimaldo, Hjulmand, and Kang-in Lee (the South Korean player's signing has not been officially announced yet) were within the transfer budget for the 2026/27 season.
These three deals together represent the amount Atletico Madrid has already spent on signings in the past season.
However, from now on, the plan is to allow players to leave before signing others. In other words, with these three deals completed, it will be time to sell some players to make room for other deals.
But Atletico does not need to sell at the moment, especially with the expected capital increase. A large part of this money will be allocated to the sports project.
The Argentine player is currently focused on the World Cup. After stating that leaving Atletico Madrid is the best option to achieve his 'dream,' Julian has not spoken again about his future in his media statements following Argentina's matches.
Realizing that a move to Barcelona is impossible, a return to England seems to be the only option available to him if he wishes to leave.
In this context, The Independent reported on Sunday that Arsenal is planning another attempt to sign Julian Alvarez, and that with Atletico refusing to negotiate with Barcelona or Real Madrid, London would be the only option available, and an offer could soon arrive at the Wanda Metropolitano.
A large sum of money and a striker like Gyokeres could be the key to this deal, knowing, as we mentioned, that Atletico Madrid does not want Julian Alvarez to leave.
