Forlán appointed coach of Uruguay national team
Uruguay has turned to Diego Forlán, one of its greatest football icons, to rebuild the 'La Celeste' national team after a disappointing campaign in the 2026 World Cup.
Uruguayan Football Association president Ignacio Alonso revealed that Forlán will become the head coach of the senior team and the U-20 team, replacing Marcelo Bielsa after Uruguay's surprising elimination in the group stage with only two points from three matches.
Forlán is a legend in Uruguayan football, having scored 5 goals in the 2010 World Cup and remains one of the country's greatest players, with 112 international appearances and 36 goals for the national team.
The 47-year-old coach will initially take the role on an interim basis, overseeing friendlies and the early stages of the 2030 World Cup qualifiers. The association will make a decision in March on making his position permanent.
Forlán already coaches the Uruguay U-20 team, meaning he will combine both roles as he looks to build a new generation for 'La Celeste'.
Despite his legendary status, Forlán comes with limited coaching experience, having only managed 11 matches with Peñarol in 2020 and 12 matches with second division side CA Atenas in 2021.
