The Turkish Football Federation announced on Wednesday that Vincenzo Montella, the head coach of the Turkey national team, is in mourning after the death of his sister Caterina, who passed away in hospital following a domestic accident.

The federation stated that doctors had made efforts to save her life over several days, but she died from her injuries.

The Turkish Football Federation wrote on X: 'On behalf of the Turkish Football Federation, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased, and especially to the head coach of our national team, Vincenzo Montella.'

Montella, 52, a former Italy national team striker, took over as coach of the Turkish national team in September 2023, leading them to the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2024) finals and then to the last World Cup finals, from which the team exited in the group stage.

Montella's contract runs until after the UEFA European Championship 'Euro 2028'.
