Enzo Fernandez defends Argentina national team

Enzo Fernandez, Argentina midfielder, believes the team represented the country in the best possible way during their World Cup campaign, despite the unfortunate scenes involving the Albiceleste players during and after the final against Spain.

Enzo received two yellow cards and was sent off in regular time before Spain secured the title with a 1-0 victory after extra time on Sunday.

The Argentine player received his first yellow card for protesting against Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, and was then sent off for a violent challenge on young Spanish defender Pau Cubarsí.

However, Enzo Fernandez wrote on his official social media accounts: 'Gradually we realize that there are things much more important than a match result.'

He added: 'This team has succeeded in representing the country in the best possible way for years, and has taught a lesson that competition is not only about victories, but also about giving maximum effort and never giving up for the national team jersey.'

The English Chelsea player continued: 'I am honored to be part of a team that has always been distinguished by high sportsmanship, strong competition, defending our country's jersey with pride, humility, and commitment.'

A heated verbal altercation broke out between Argentina players and coaching staff and several Spain players as they prepared to celebrate the victory after the match.

FIFA announced it will open an investigation through its disciplinary committee regarding these violations, which threatens sanctions against any player or coach involved in the clashes, in addition to a possible fine against the Argentine Football Association.

This coincided with widespread speculation on social media about what happened in the Argentina dressing room before the match against Spain, and that Lionel Messi, the team captain, told his teammates that the World Cup final would be his last international match.
