From Al-Ahli to Al-Ittihad: Al-Diriyah Stuns Saudi League Giants with Portuguese Deal
Al-Diriyah signs Portuguese winger Pedro Goncalves from Sporting Lisbon, beating top Saudi clubs Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad.
Al-Diriyah, recently promoted to the Saudi Roshn League, has continued to deal blows to the competition's top clubs, this time to Al-Ittihad, after securing a new Portuguese signing.
The Saudi newspaper "Al-Riyadiah" said that Al-Diriyah has agreed with Portuguese winger Pedro Goncalves of Sporting Lisbon to move to its ranks during the current summer transfer window.
Goncalves will sign a two-year contract with Al-Diriyah, with an option to extend for a third season, and he will receive a total salary of 30 million euros over that period.
Al-Diriyah finalized the deal based on a recommendation from its new Portuguese coach Bruno Lage, who placed him on his priority list, enabling the Saudi club to reach an agreement with him.
The Portuguese winger is scheduled to undergo medical examinations in the coming hours before officially signing the contracts, and then he will join Al-Diriyah's training camp.
Al-Diriyah outperformed many Saudi clubs that were monitoring the 28-year-old in recent times, most notably Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad.
The newly promoted club had previously dealt a blow to Al-Ahli after agreeing with Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye to move to its ranks following the end of his contract with his former club Everton.
Goncalves is considered one of Sporting Lisbon's most prominent stars in recent years, specifically since moving to the club in 2020 from Famalicão, after brief stints with the youth teams at Valencia and Wolverhampton.
Goncalves' most notable individual achievement was winning the Portuguese league top scorer award in his first season with Sporting Lisbon in 2020-2021, when he led the team to the title.
Collectively, the 28-year-old led the capital club to win the Portuguese league title three times, the Portuguese Cup once, the Super Cup once, and the League Cup twice, in addition to winning the UEFA Nations League in 2025 with the Portuguese national team.
It is worth mentioning that Goncalves played 41 matches with Sporting Lisbon last season, scoring 15 goals and providing 9 assists.
