Egyptian Mayar Sherif advanced to the round of 16 at the Hamburg Women's Tennis Open after defeating Swiss Simona Waltert on Wednesday in the round of 32 of the clay-court tournament.

Sherif defeated Waltert 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), setting up a meeting on Thursday with Frenchwoman Elsa Jacquemot, who defeated German Tessa Johanna Brockmann 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 32.

Mayar Sherif enters the tournament with high morale after winning the Yash Open, a WTA 250 event, for the first time in her career, moving up to world No. 55 in the WTA rankings, maintaining her lead among Arab and African players.

In contrast, Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the second seed, advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Argentine María Carlé 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16 today.

Spanish player Paula Badosa also reached the round of 16 after defeating Polish Katarzyna Kawa 7-5, 6-4, and will face Hungarian Panna Udvardy, the third seed, in the next match.

Russian Alina Charaeva secured a spot in the quarterfinals after defeating Austrian Sinja Kraus, the eighth seed, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in the round of 16, which also saw the victory of German Tamara Korpatsch, the fifth seed, over her compatriot Julia Stusek 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
