Lewis Holtby, former Germany international midfielder, announced his retirement from football on Tuesday evening at the age of 35. Holtby, who was most recently playing for Dutch side NAC Breda, announced his decision on Instagram.

Holtby wrote: 'The greatest honor of my career was representing my country - something I will always be proud of.'

Holtby played three international matches for Germany between October 2010 and November 2012. He spent most of his career in the Bundesliga, playing for several clubs including Schalke, Mainz, Hamburg, Bochum, and Holstein Kiel.

Holtby also played in England with Tottenham, Fulham, and Blackburn. Holtby wrote: 'I will never give up football. This game will always be part of my identity, and I am excited for what lies ahead.'
